Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is far more than a simple battle between good and evil. It is a remarkable work that captures human weakness and cruelty, as well as the emptiness left behind when everything is over.

Most notably, this installment unleashes the long-hidden, harrowing backstories of the Upper Ranks amid the all-out war between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons, delivering an enormous emotional wave to viewers.

🎥 Upper Rank Three Akaza: The Human Sorrow He Finds at the End of His Obsession with Strength

The first story to truly shake the heart is that of Upper Rank Three, Akaza—once known as Hakuji.

After becoming a figure of hatred for killing Kyojuro Rengoku in the Mugen Train arc, Akaza clashes with Tanjiro and Giyu inside the Infinity Castle, where he is revealed to be the demon carrying perhaps the most deeply human sorrow.

Akazas exist in our society, too. Many people are harmed by collective selfishness and are forced to live with those wounds.

Do you remember the Jiyoungpa case from more than 20 years ago? Driven by a deep sense of victimhood, the group carried out horrific, indiscriminate murders targeting wealthy people.

Akaza wanted to protect his father, but chose illegal means to do so. After meeting the right teacher, however, he was able to find happiness in life.

That hope was brutally destroyed by people consumed by collective selfishness, and it seems that he eventually lost his grip on reason. It is a deeply tragic fate.

  • The story in detail: The way Akazas life falls apart—from stealing to care for his sick father to the happy moments he shares with his teacher Keizo and his fiancée Koyuki, all destroyed by human malice—is heartbreaking to watch.
  • What to watch for: The strength he pursued so obsessively was ultimately an expression of his hatred for the weak self that had failed to protect the people he loved. Akazas self-destructive exit demonstrates the narrative depth unique to Demon Slayer, a series capable of making viewers feel compassion even for a villain.

🎭 Upper Rank Two Doma: Pure Evil Without Emotion—and Its Unsettling Allure

Upper Rank Two Doma

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Akaza is Upper Rank Two, Doma, whose presence inspires a different kind of bone-chilling fear. His story, intertwined with Shinobu, Kanao, and Inosuke, represents the peak of the psychopathic demon archetype.

Unlike Akaza, Doma embodies pure evil. From childhood, he lacked a conscience, viewed even his parents with contempt, and treated the world like a toy to be manipulated according to his warped worldview.

Were his parents ultimately to blame? Elevating a child with no capacity for judgment onto an altar and treating him as a deity may have been the starting point for his distorted view of the world.

As a result, both Doma and everyone around him continued heading in the wrong direction, while the damage only grew over time.

He is certainly a figure who must be regarded as a genuine demon, yet it is difficult not to wonder whether he might have turned out differently if he had grown up with a different education and environment.

By contrast, there are many people around us who received a proper education yet use gaslighting to turn others into their subjects, tormenting them through cults and pseudo-religious movements.

Looking at them is both pitiful and tragic. Perhaps the true demons are the people who operate these cults.

  • The story in detail: The leader of the Eternal Paradise Cult, who claimed to save humanity from sorrow while consuming people—especially women—because he had been incapable of feeling emotions since birth, is the embodiment of the grotesque. As the killer of Kanae, Shinobus older sister, and the person responsible for the death of Inosukes mother, Domas story is tied to the Demon Slayer Corps deepest resentment.
  • What to watch for: Even amid violent emotional conflict, Doma never loses his smile. The emptiness within him, set against the dazzling spectacle of his Blood Demon Art, pushes the tension to its absolute limit. The strange emotional response he experiences at the moment of death is both disturbing and unforgettable.

⚔️ Upper Rank One Kokushibo: Overwhelming Despair and the Arrival of a Dominant Presence

At last, deep within the Infinity Castle, the presence of Upper Rank One, Kokushibo, begins to emerge in full. The moment he appears on screen, the atmosphere seems to shift, and his crushing presence takes control of every frame.

Only a few Lower Ranks had appeared before, while Upper Ranks Four and Five had already been dealt with in earlier installments. In the Infinity Castle arc, Zenitsu also defeats his former senior, who had become Upper Rank Six.

That leaves only Upper Ranks Two and One.

Upper Rank One resembles the sparring doll seen in the Swordsmith Village arc. This figure from several hundred years ago first appears among Tanjiros ancestors, setting the story in motion. The earrings, too, are passed down through the generations for this reason.

Several spoiler-heavy scenes make it easy to see that this character has a deep connection to Tanjiros family.

The biggest question now is why this central figure—who once drove Muzan to the brink of defeat—became Upper Rank One. It seems likely that the next installment will finally shed light on that mystery.

  • Presence and key details: Wearing a uniform like the Demon Slayer Corps members and carrying a sword at his waist, Kokushibo has a grotesque face marked by six eyes. His arrival introduces an absolute terror distinct from Muzan, the origin of the demons: the terror of a swordsman.
  • What to watch for: His resemblance to the users of the first Breathing styles, combined with the power to overwhelm the Stone, Wind, and Mist Hashira—the Corps most elite warriors—in an instant, makes him feel like an immense cliff towering over the entire Infinity Castle arc. As fragments of his identity and past are gradually revealed, the viewer is left trembling.

✍️ Final Thoughts: A Superb Finale Forged by Direction and Storytelling

The Infinity Castle arc is far more than a series of clashes and spectacular action.

The Demon Slayer Corps desperate battle is intricately woven around three emotional pillars: the sorrow of Upper Rank Three, the horror of Upper Rank Two, and the overwhelming force of Upper Rank One.

The contrast between humans forced to become monsters in order to fight monsters and demons who abandoned their humanity, only to remain trapped by the sins of their human lives, is brutally beautiful.

That concludes this interpretation of the protagonists stories through Demon Slayer.

If you view it as nothing more than an animated series, you will miss half of what makes it compelling. But if you watch it through the lens of the important values and questions that shape our own lives, I believe the films meaning and value become all the more powerful.

See you in the next installment.
