The reality dating show I’m Solo, episode 261

Every episode is entertaining because it follows new people on their search for love.

After watching episode 261 of the unvarnished documentary-style show I’m Solo, I found myself reflecting on several troubling moments.

Age Isn’t the Problem. The Way You Think Matters Most.

Sang-cheol’s feelings for Ok-sun appear to be moving beyond simple attraction and into something resembling obsession.

His insistence on pushing the relationship in one direction, without allowing any room to breathe, makes him seem immature despite his age.

I’m someone who believes age itself is not what matters. But when it comes to a younger person’s relationship with an older partner, their attitude and behavior are important.

The ability to take things calmly and listen carefully to the other person can make them forget the age gap. It also helps protect affection and establish the trust that keeps a relationship strong.

Superstition Is Not a Solution; It Is the Beginning of the Problem.

When Ok-sun said she wanted some distance, Sang-cheol gave an unsettling response, saying that he had felt the same way. But during a group conversation in the shared living room, he eventually began talking about what a fortune-teller had told him.

Apparently keeping Ok-sun in mind, he offered a rosy prediction: the other person would choose him, and he would enjoy great happiness.

Then he said something that really should never have been said. He claimed that they were sexually compatible…

At that point, the cast’s favorable impression of Sang-cheol began to shift—not merely to zero, but into negative territory.

His obsession had made him anxious, and that anxiety led him to say things he should have kept to himself. But there is one important point I hope we can all take away from this.

Many people visit shamans or fortune-tellers because they want relief from anxiety about the future. In more extreme cases, some hand over money to them as if they were slaves, allowing a single word from these figures to dictate the course of their entire lives.

I have often seen people reach that point and end up watching their lives fall apart.

If life could really be made to unfold according to their predictions, how easy would life be?

Wouldn’t it be a wonderfully simple formula? Earn money, hand it over to them, and follow their instructions—and a rosy future will supposedly appear.

But life is not that simple. God gave human beings free will. That means we can shape our lives through our own choices and efforts.

The illusion that we are merely following answers decided in advance is, in itself, a source of suffering. If some people were destined to become kings while others were destined to live as slaves, wouldn’t we be no different from chess pieces trapped in a life without hope, passion, or happiness?

There are television channels that repeatedly feature shamans and present them as though they were gods. I believe programming like that should never be broadcast.

Why should anyone decide the course of their life based on a shaman’s words? If you need help, seek it from a counseling center, a mentor, your family, or anyone else who genuinely cares about you.

People who trust themselves, keep working, and carve out their own path are respected for precisely that reason.

Life can be difficult and painful, but I believe there is something truly valuable and beautiful about moving forward with the courage to trust yourself and face those challenges.

Superstition is not a solution; it is the beginning of the problem.

Too Much Self-Pity Makes Communication Difficult.

I studied psychology. Since people tend to rely on what they have learned, I have developed a habit of paying close attention to the way people speak.

Watching Sang-cheol apologize to the older man competing with him for Ok-sun, I had the impression that he was the kind of person whose excessive self-pity makes others uncomfortable—yet he mistakenly believed that apologizing was an act of consideration.

It seemed to me that he had turned something that should have been for the other person into something he was doing for himself, while mistakenly viewing the result as satisfactory.

Because Sang-cheol is so consumed by self-pity, I get the sense that he pays little attention to what other people say or do.

Don’t Try to Win Love by Wielding Your Advantages.

In an earlier conversation, Sang-cheol said he had applied for a U.S. green card and proceeded to lay out his entire life plan.

My immediate thought was that this man’s limitations were clear. In other words, he seemed to believe he could win someone over by leveraging his circumstances.

Rather than seeking shared laughter, happiness, and joy, he seemed more interested in attracting someone by getting them to focus on the things he could boast about.

Even small, ordinary conversations can bring great happiness when two people share a little wit, cleverness, and humor.

Even if someone became president of the United States—or a world-renowned scholar or billionaire—what would it matter if their partner were not happy?

Even on a modest salary, two people who are always laughing and happy together are living a valuable, blessed life.

Through Sang-cheol, I was reminded once again that the way a person thinks matters more than their age. With that, I’ll bring this piece to a close.

FAQ

Why did Sang-cheol appear to be obsessed with Ok-sun?

On the show, Sang-cheol went beyond simply expressing interest in Ok-sun. He appeared to put his own feelings and expectations ahead of her wishes.

Why can it be dangerous to rely too heavily on fortune-telling or shamanism?

There is no need to condemn people simply for turning to fortune-telling or shamanism when they feel anxious about the future. But it can be dangerous to entrust every important life decision to the results. Life is ultimately shaped by our own choices and efforts, and the more we rely on other people’s predictions, the more likely we are to lose the ability to make decisions and take responsibility for ourselves.

What matters more than conditions in a relationship?

Financial means, occupation, and plans to live abroad may all be practical considerations, but they are not enough to create genuine affection. Emotional stability—shown in everyday life through listening well, sharing laughter, showing consideration, and demonstrating empathy—is what helps a relationship last.

What matters most in a relationship with an age gap?

The article argues that the way people treat each other matters more than their actual ages. If someone can communicate calmly, respect the other person’s opinions, and build trust, the age gap may not be a major problem. Ultimately, maturity is revealed not by a number, but by a person’s behavior and way of thinking.

What was the biggest message episode 261 of I’m Solo conveyed to viewers?

This episode prompted viewers to reconsider the difference between attraction and obsession, the difference between favorable circumstances and sincerity, and the importance of taking responsibility for shaping one’s own life. Rather than relying on advantages or fate to win someone over, it showed that a healthy relationship begins with respecting each other and building trust.
